Close one on Farmland Court

On Saturday May 10, 2008 at approximately 14:00 hours, District 4 was dispatched to 4 Farmland Court for the reported fire in a bedroom that was possibly out. Since units were at the street fair, Ladder 627 was in service quickly with a crew of 4 under the command of Lt. Scarpa. Capt. Mateyka left Station 620 in unit 624 since he had just completed his Fit Testing. On arrival, Capt. Mateyka called a light smoke condition and ordered Ladder 627 to side A and to make entry to check for fire conditions. Engine 621 under command of Lt. D. Calvo with a crew of 4 also responded from the station and was directed to stand by the hydrant at Bella Drive. After prepping the hydrant, Engine 622 called in service with Lt. Lange and one additional and 622 took the place of Engine 621 at the hydrant. Interior crews reported no visible fire conditions and were checking for extensions. The home owner was vacuuming the 2nd floor when a malfunction occurred, catching the cord, vacuum and carpeting on fire. The quick thinking homeowner evacuated her three children to a neighbors house to call 911, then reentered the structure to knock the fire down with a house hold fire extinquisher. Her efforts definetly kept damage to a minimum and saved her home. All check for extensions were negative and overhaul of the carpeting was performed. BLS unit 16 evaluated the home owner as a precaution with a crew of three. Rescue 625 with a crew of 3 also responded and was staged on Brookside Road. BLS unit 17 was on another run and was in the middle of transporting the patient when the call came in. All units were back in service by 14:45 hrs
